out of your preview session
5 STEPS TO GET THE MOST
Your bridal makeup trial - or as I like to call it, your preview session (because you're not on trial in a court case here!) - is such an important part of your wedding prep. It’s your chance to explore ideas, ask questions, and ensure you feel completely happy and confident with how you’ll look on the day. Here are five steps to help you make the most of it.
1. Make a Day of It
If you can, try to plan your preview session on a day when you’ve got other wedding bits going on - a dress fitting, your hair trial, or even just a lovely lunch. It helps to see how your makeup feels, alongside the rest of your bridal look. If you’re planning to get a spray tan for the wedding, have one before your preview so your skin tone is accurate. And most importantly, make the day feel special.
2. Expect It to Be a Bit More Than Usual
Bridal makeup is always a little more polished than your everyday face. That doesn’t mean it has to feel heavy or overdone - just enough to hold up through happy tears, hugs and dance floor moments. Trust your makeup artist to find that balance so you still feel like yourself, just with a little extra staying power.
3. Come Prepared
Bring along any photos you’ve saved, whether it’s makeup inspo, your dress, your veil or accessories. Seeing the full picture helps your artist tailor your makeup to the overall vibe of the day. And if you're not completely sure what you want yet, that’s okay - a good artist will guide you through the options and help you find a look that feels right.
4. Think About Your Bridesmaids Too
It’s worth thinking ahead about whether you want your bridesmaids to have similar makeup, or something that suits each of them individually. Personally, I think everyone should feel like the best version of themselves. If they already have their dresses, you can check which colours might complement their look, and avoid doubling up on your own.
5. Be Honest (and Take Your Time)
Your preview session is the time to speak up. Don’t worry about offending anyone - this is all about getting it right for you. Let your artist know if there’s anything you’d tweak. Check how the makeup looks in natural light, under indoor lighting and on camera. Take photos, look from different angles, and make sure it all feels good to you.
In Summary
A good preview session isn’t just about the makeup - it’s about making sure you feel completely relaxed, in safe hands and excited for the big day. With a bit of planning, honest communication and space to try things out, you’ll walk away feeling calm, confident and ready.
